10 tips for waterproofing vegan and faux leather

Faux leather, like vegan leather, doesn't tolerate moisture well. That's why we're sharing some helpful methods, products, and tips for making it waterproof.

Also known as faux leather or leatherette, imitation leather is a synthetic material composed partially of plastic, just like vegan leather. While they are more resistant to moisture than natural leather, they are not completely waterproof.

Why protect imitation leather from water?

Waterproofing is essential if your bags, clothing, furniture, or shoes are often exposed to rain or moisture. It forms a protective barrier that prevents water infiltration and the formation of stains. This protective layer increases the durability of your items. It also simplifies cleaning, as dirt no longer penetrates as easily.

10 tips for properly waterproofing vegan leather and faux leather

This step is part of the overall maintenance of vegan and imitation leather, to be carried out after dusting and cleaning the fabric.

Practical advice:

  • Use a waterproofing spray , spraying from a distance of 30–40 cm, evenly over the entire surface;

  • Apply a waterproofing cream with a clean microfiber cloth, using gentle, circular motions;

  • The product must be applied to a clean surface ;

  • The surface of the imitation leather or vegan leather must be perfectly dry before application;

  • Allow to dry for at least 24 hours before using the treated object.

Tips for optimal protection:

  • Waterproof your items upon purchase , to protect them from the start;

  • Limit frequent contact with water as much as possible to avoid premature wear;

  • Test the product on an inconspicuous area to verify compatibility;

  • Do not confuse protective lotion with waterproofing: the former preserves flexibility and color, but does not protect against water;

  • Products labeled "leathers and textiles" are generally suitable for vegan leather and imitation leather.

What products should I use?

Choosing the right product is crucial. An unsuitable waterproofing product could damage the material. Always check that the product is compatible with faux leather, and not just for genuine leather or textiles like cotton.

You'll find several types of waterproofing products commercially available, in cream or spray form. Among the most common:

  • Sofolk water-repellent, stain-resistant leather and fabric

  • Colourlock waterproofing for leather and textiles

  • Decathlon anti-stain leather and textile

These products are often sold in 200 to 500 ml sizes. For small items like bags, shoes, or jackets, a small bottle is sufficient. For larger items like sofas, opt for a larger size.

If possible, apply the waterproofer outdoors , as some products release a strong odor during application.
